I find it easiest to navigate the calendar in "agenda" view, which you can switch it to by clicking the "agenda" tab in the upper right hand corner of the calendar.

RecTech: PAID Summer Internship Programs

**Students who successfully complete any of the following internship programs will be paid a stipend of $599.

Please note there are two applications, one for the full summer programs and another for the short workshop in robotics at Garfield Teen Life Center. The waterbotics applications are due THIS FRIDAY, but the other applications are not due until May 31st. The main application includes the details of five internship programs, each at a different RecTech site. Please feel free to contact me with any further questions. Explore the world of underwater robotics with RecTech Waterbotics! Discover all the moving pieces of a robot and how scientists are using them to explore harsh habitats from outer space to the depths of the sea floor. We will use Lego Mindstorms Education software and robotic parts, and you will learn to program your own unique robots to overcome twisty obstacles and crafty challenges.Participants who successfully complete the program earn a $250 stipend and service learning hours.

Youth Media Corps: Creating Film, Audio, & Visual Media @ Delridge Community Center, 4501 Delridge Way SW, Seattle, 98106

Join the Youth Media Corps Interns and gain valuable digital media technical skills while learning about your community and having fun in the process!  Youth Media Corps interns work with program staff and partner organizations to create original media materials for area nonprofits and community development organizations.  You will learn the craft of digital, audio, and visual storytelling to help serve organizations who contribute to a socially responsible world.

This summer’s RecTech Interns will create short films to inform people about an issue relevant to you and your community. We're looking for dedicated and enthusiastic youth who want to learn to about technology and filmmaking and have an interest in community involvement.
Sampling History: Hip-Hop Music Production @ Rainier Community Center, 4600 38th Ave South, Seattle, 98118
July 2 – August 24 (no class July 4); Monday – Thursday, 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Hip-Hop has roots in many different genres of music including, Classical, Jazz, Reggae, Soul, and Blues and is often an amalgamation of multiple sounds and “samples” collected from sonic works of the past. Interns in this course we will learn about the roots of sample-based production, walk through the process of beat-making, and piece together original compositions.  Write, produce, and perform your own original works while learning the history and importance of Black and African-American music.

Do you want to work on websites? Did you know that you can make a career doing it? Communicate your ideas 
across the globe! In this program you will learn web design, graphic design, HTML and interactive animations. You will have the opportunity to work with professional programs such as Photoshop for image editing, Dreamweaver for web page creation, Illustrator for logos and buttons and Flash for animation. Then put your new skills to use working on a website for a local nonprofit or building a site for an issue you feel passionate about.

Adobe Flash is all over the web.  Even if you don’t know what it is, chances are you’ve seen and used it! From pausing videos to playing a game, almost everything interactive is made with Flash. Whether you want to create your own online game or a presentation that makes PowerPoint seem dull, Flash will help you create a fully interactive experience. RecTech winter interns will learn to create digital animation, add interactive buttons, and use advanced programming options for other interactive features, all using Adobe Flash. We will then create an application that informs and educates, either about technology skills or for a nonprofit organization serving the Southwest Seattle community

Washington Business Week- great summer opportunity

Washington Business Week, Energy Week, and HealthCare Week are great ways to explore your interests this summer at various college campuses in the region.

Do you have an interest in:
-energy?
-business/entrepreneurship?
-health care?

If so, you can apply to spend a week on a college campus!!!  Daniel Jean Baptiste did this program last year and spent a week in a dorm room at Seattle University for Washington Business Week.

Summer Camp: Women interested in fire fighting

Camp Blaze is a nonprofit organization committed to maximizing women's involvement in the fire service through education, networking, advocacy, and policy development.The mission of Blaze is to develop, support, and implement an annual camp for qualified young women to learn about the fire service and to have a great time while they're at it.

Young women will learn, among many other things:
Rappelling
Using self-contained breathing apparatus
Search and rescue
Aerial ladder climbing
Teamwork

What: Girl Justice! is an interactive one-day workshop that covers PV’s gender-specific and strengths-based approaches to serving adolescent female-identified youth. The work is rooted in girlhood & social justice so this workshop will be full of anti-oppression fun!

In this workshop, you will strengthen your girl justice analysis as you:
o Deconstruct messages embedded in the socialization of girls in our culture
o Analyze how intersections of oppressions impact youth
o Explore your own relationship to privilege and oppression
o Discuss how adultism affects our ability to effectively serve youth
o Practice strength-based approaches in one-on-one and group work
o Become a better adult ally to youth!

Summer job opp!! Seattle Youth Garden Works



Seattle Youth Garden Works is hiring youth ages 16-21 for our summer youth crew!

At Seattle Youth Garden Works, agriculture and enterprise combine to create a practical and meaningful employment experience for youth. People from diverse backgrounds come together to grow food, and in the process develop personal connections to the food system.

Crew members work as part of a team of ten youth farmers with Seattle Youth Garden Works (SYGW) staff to grow food on an urban farm at the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture in the U-District and sell our produce at the U-District Farmers' Market on Saturdays. This job also includes participation in educational activities and job skills training.


Summer schedule: Tuesday, July 5-Saturday, August 27
Crew meets every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Some Saturdays at the Farmers Market, 8-11:30 a.m. OR 11:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Youth must qualify as homeless or underserved.

Summer Tutoring @ New Futures

Help students improve their English skills over the summer at New Futures in The Heights

There are Arabic speakers, Burmese ( that's 7 different languages), Vietnamese, Nepali, and Tigrinya along with volunteer interpreters for each language.

New Futures will do a summer tutoring program this year for at least 34 kids - including younger siblings. If you or anyone you know who has good language/writing skills would like to help these young people keep improving their English through the summer - please let Annie know (206-275-1393).

Attention Juniors: Mathematics Summer Program @ UW

The UW College of Engineering is pleased to present the 2011 UW College of Engineering Mathematics Academy.

The Math Academy is an intensive, four-week residential program held on the Seattle UW Campus in the summer. It is designed to help high-achieving rising seniors develop the math and problem-solving skills necessary to succeed in engineering disciplines, and exposes students to a variety of examples of engineering research and careers in practice.

Who Should Apply: The Math Academy accepts applications from current juniors (class of 2012) who will complete a minimum of pre-calculus by the 2010-11
