A really great way to gain experience and build your resume is to volunteer.  Through volunteer work you are often able to get a higher level of experience than you would have otherwise, which will benifit you in the long run.
Reasons why YOU should volunteer!

1# Free Food
Sometimes you get hungry.

2# Meet New People
Make friends-get a different view of things.

3# Help People Around You
Feel like you did something to help your community.

4# It's Fun Once You Get Used To It
It's healthy to have fun.

5# You Get to Go Outside and See The City.
It's good to have an adventure.

6# Personal Growth
It's always good to learn more about yourself.

7# You Make the World a Better Place
That's good cause we have to live in it.

8# Gain Job Experience
You have to get a job eventually, your parents will kick you out.

9# Gain Entrance into College
You need a good education to get a quality job these days.

10# Something to Keep You Busy
In case you get bored.

Calling Volunteers for Nature Consortium

Hi All - Michael T. is hoping some of you might be interested in volunteering with him at Nature Consortium. Please take a minute to read his email below.

Thanks! Megan

Dear Advisors,

My name is Michael Thunstrom and I have noticed that there is barely anyone from our school, besides me, who volunteers or visits my internship site, the Nature Consortium.  The NC is always looking for new volunteers.  I think it would be great if other students would volunteer or try to intern there, especially those who do not have an internship.

A good intern for this site would be someone:
- who is hard-working
-is willing to get their hands dirty
-who does not cuss a lot, is respectful

The internship involves working in the woods, using tools to remove invasive plants such as English Ivy and Himalayan Blackberry.  The competencies used heavily are communication, Social reasoning, and Empirical reasioning.

I would be happy to talk with any student who is interested, they can stop by Mr. Levine's room B7

Thank you for your time.

-Michael Thunstrom

Sincerely,

Michael Thunstrom

LGBT Friendly Colleges and Universities

Huge congrats to The Closet Crashers for putting on such an awesome event. The word on the street is it was...
THE BEST DRAG DAY EVER!!

As a follow up to yesterday's Drag Day here's a great resource to learn about LGBT Friendly Colleges and Universities.
Campus Pride
Building Future Leaders & Safer, More LGBT-Friendly Colleges & Universities

What is Campus Pride?
Campus Pride represents the only national nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create a safer college environment for LGBT students. The organization is a volunteer-driven network "for" and "by" student leaders. The primary objective of Campus Pride is to develop necessary resources, programs and services to support LGBT and ally students on college campuses across the United States.
Founded in the Fall of 2001 and launched a year later in October of 2002, Campus Pride started as an online community and resource clearinghouse under the name Campus PrideNet.  The original founding partners were M. Chad Wilson, Sarah E. Holmes & Shane L. Windmeyer. In 2006, the organization broadened its outreach efforts and restructured as the current educational non-profit organization Campus Pride.  As part of the restructuring process, the Lambda 10 Project for LGBT Fraternity & Sorority Issues (www.lambda10.org) became an educational initiative of Campus Pride.  The executive director is national LGBT civil rights leader and campus pioneerShane L. Windmeyer

Burien Mural Project--Submit your Artwork!

Deadline May 25th

This summer muralist Augustina Droze will be creating a large mural on the wall on 4th Avenue SW at 151st, across from the Burien Library/City Hall on the building housing the Dollar Tree. Burien Artists are invited to create “patterns of identity” to possibly be incorporated into the final artwork. Open to all ages…just need to be a Burien resident.
Augustina has created murals across the country and internationally, including Palm Beach, Chicago, Indianapolis, Baltimore, and Buffalo. She recently worked with underprivileged artists in Nagpur, India to create the largest mural in the city.
Augustina states “I am a two dimensional artist who focuses primarily on mural painting. I find that the scale of a mural allows for increased expression and evokes a transitory response in viewers. Murals have the ability to relocate an onlooker and change one's perspective. I also feel that the accessibility of mural arts creates a large and robust viewing population which is often more diverse than that which frequents museums or galleries. Viewers are forced to face the art, make personal aesthetic and emotional judgments and move on.” Augustina is influences by the passionate murals of the Mexican mural movement (most notably Diego Riviera) and the realistic narrative murals of contemporary muralists including Jeff Zimmerman and John Pugh. These artists have helped to shape Augustina's style and scale.
Her work can be seen at www.admuralstudio.com
Please use the form attached or a separate piece of paper to do the drawing. The drawing should not contain any logos or words. Please either e-mail a PDF version of the drawing to ginak@burienwa.gov or drop off drawings at the Burien Community Center, 14700 6th Ave SW, Mon-Thur 8:30am-8pm, Friday 8:30am-5pm. Deadline is May 25th.
