At the bottom of this page you will find a google calendar with information about events, application deadlines, and program information. I find it easiest to navigate the calendar in "agenda" view, which you can switch it to by clicking the "agenda" tab in the upper right hand corner of the calendar.

In addition to the blog, we frequently send out emails with information that is then posted on the blog. Whether your a student, parents, or community member please feel free to join the list serve! You can do this by emailing me the message "add to list serve": macdanme@hsd401.org.

Women take a free flight!

Did you know March 7th – March 13th is Women of Aviation Week? In celebration, women can enter an essay or poem to win a free flying lesson. Video Competion: Spoke word, poetry, rap


Get MotivatED is challenging students to create a short rap or spoken word video about how education influences your life. You can rhyme about your goals, going to college, school pride…anything you want. You must be 13-19 years old to enter. The video cannot be longer than 60 seconds (see website for list of rules). The Highline High School Alumni Subject Scholarships are finally available!! All seniors who are planning to attend a 2 year, 4 year, tech or community college next year should APPLY!! Subjects include: English, Social Studies, Math, Science, Business, World Language, Art/Ceramics, Photography, and Music. Each scholarship will have different requirements. There are links to lots of great scholarships on Mrs. Tanueco’s scholarships site, including the “Highline Council PTSA” scholarship. This scholarship is only available to students in the Highline District who plan to attend college next year. I highly recommend filling out this scholarships application as well. The deadline for the YMCA College Scholarships is quickly approaching! If you are a graduating senior, have ever been involved with the YMCA in any way, and are a King County or South Snohmish County resident you could be eligible for 4 YMCA scholarships. The application is available in the College and Career Center. DEADLINE March 18th, 2011

There are lots of scholarships posted in the College and Career Center and EVEN MORE in the Counsiling Office. Don't pass up the opportunity to apply!

Field Trips



College Awareness Day at UW-Bothell on Friday, March 18th


ATTENTION Sophomores and Juniors…Want to visit University of Washington, Bothell Campus??? This trip will be on Friday, March 18th from 9am to 1pm. Students will be leaving Highline at 7:30 a.m. and return by 2pm. Food and transportation will be paid for through the university. If you are interested, come see Ms. Britta in the Career Center to sign-up and pick up a permission slip. Permission slips are due back by Friday, March 11th.

College Planning Day at Bellevue College on Thursday, March 24th
College Planning Day is coming up and we will be taking a field trip to Bellevue College on March 24th. There will be a college fair with representatives from schools all over the state. This is a great opportunity for sophomores, juniors and undecided seniors. Please come to the college and career center for a permission slip. Space is limited so come ASAP!

College Prep: Mentors2College



Attention Juniors:

NELA (Northwest Education Loan Association) offers a FREE college prep program for juniors going into their senior year. Through this program you will be connected with a mentor who will help keep you on track as you prepare and apply for college, scholarships, and financial aid. This is a really great opportunity!! After School Programs


Y-Achievers: Meets Monday's After school to talk about preparing for college and life after high school. This program is open to all students. Students who attend after school meeting get priority for Saturday field trips through YMCA (past field trip have included campus visits, museums, and participate in other fun, hands on events). This would be great to help build experiences for your college application. YMCA also offers a scholarship to students who are involved in their programs.


Youth Venture: Are you interested in starting your own business or do you have a really great idea for a project that could help make a significant change in your community? This is a program that will help you develop those ideas. At the end you will have created a "venture" that you can present in efforts to be granted $1,000 to use towards your project. Meetings will begin in April after school from 2:30-4:30. Space is limited. If you are interested please contact Mrs. D to sign up (come to the college and career center or send me an email: macdanme@hsd401.org). This is open to all students, but would be a great way for juniors to get started on their senior project!


The HHS Robotics team is looking for more people to help out! If you want to be involved with the competition in any of the following areas please let me know: photographing the progress and competition; designing a banner and/or t-shirt for the team; web designer to create a website for the team; business planner to outline the teams budget **Being involved with the robotics team allows you to become eligible for the US First Scholarship. There is a place for everyone!


After School Study Lab: is looking for student volunteers to help their peers with homework. All areas of expertise are welcome, but the most help is need with math. If you are interested in volunteering please see Ms. Shawn at the front desk in the Library after school Monday-Thursday. Study lab starts at 2:15 and ends at 3:15.

Job Opportunity:

The City of Burien is hiring Summer Day Camp Recreation Leaders to work 12-40 hours per week for $8.71-15.67/hour depending on qualifications. Camp Craz is looking for someone who is energetic, creative, dependable, and interested in working with children ages 6-11.
